We went on a dive trip to Cozumel Mexico from the last Saturday in February to the first Saturday in March 2021. Our trip started with a 2 hour drive to Miami FL. We decided to fly from Miami because American Airlines has a direct flight to Cozumel. The flight was great with social distancing the whole way. The flight was about 1/4 full and passengers were allowed to space out. Our checked bags happen to be 2 of the first 3 to come down the conveyor. The flight home went almost as smoothly.
We rented a mini van and there was a young man waiting to take us to it. We always get the full coverage to avoid any delays or problems when returning the vehicle. See our Bonaire blog when we get it posted…
The weather was in the mid 80s every day and sunny with a brief shower on the Friday before departure. We visited several restaurants, bars, and the one brewery on the island. Every where we went people were practicing social distancing and everywhere had a mask mandate, temp check and mandatory hand sanitizer before entering. All of the locals wore masks even outside and everyone was very friendly.
Our drinking experiences in Cozumel were all very good or better, most of the places we drank were on the water or had a water view. Coconuts is a great bar on top of probably the largest hill in Cozumel and has the most scenic views of the island, the drinks there were good and reasonably priced. Janine’s across from the Mega grocery store had an 2 for 1 happy hour and beautiful waterfront view. We found a place on the back side of the island with no name that made the best rumrunners ever and we bought souvenirs there. The one brewery on the island was called Punta Sur Cerveceria. We tried a flight with all 6 of their beers. We enjoyed every one of them. The workers there were very friendly and knowledgeable about the beer.
A really good flight
The quality was beyond expectations!!
Very friendly and knowledgeable!!
We stayed in a small town home community called Costa Del Sol. We had a 3 story town house with a beautiful sea view from the large patio on the 3rd floor, it had 3 bedrooms and 3.5 baths. We got a great deal of around $1400 with all fees and taxes included for the week. We were on the southern end of the island near most of the dive sites.
We dove with Aldora divers. Aldora has 4 fast boats and they picked us up at the dock at Costa Del Sol. This made for a short boat ride to and from the dive sites. We had 14 dives in 5 days including one night dive. Our dives averaged right about 90 minutes per dive and we had nitrox. They gave everyone steel 120s and we usually had lots of air left and were the last 2 divers back on the boat. The diving in Cozumel is so incredible that almost everyone who dives there goes back for more. Dean and I had both been there before and each of us had decided we would one day go back. We saw big things such as dolphins, turtles, sharks, and rays, as well as little things like octipuses, nudabranckes, sea slugs, aerocrabs, banded coral shrimp, and flamingo tongue. There are incredible swim throughs and the structure is beyond description with peaks and valleys and always something to see every where turn.
